Fifteen years ago as winter approached, my husband and I drove through Ponderay and Sandpoint, Idaho, as part of our year-long ministry travels. We intended to stay for one night but ended up being there for over a month during the holiday season. We met so many wonderful people, made some lasting friends, and even got to see the 2003 National Christmas Tree, which that year was from Idaho.
Bonner County has forever been special to us as we have returned over the years in other seasons and explored more of the area. Yet that first visit remains a cherished memory as we were awestruck by the magnificence of North Idaho’s natural beauty, the charm of so many locally-owned businesses, and the sense of community we experienced.
Residents who read this should take a moment to pause and realize what a unique, extraordinary privilege it is to enjoy your corner of the U.S. It doesn’t matter whether you live in a posh lodge or small apartment, the mountains and lakes are there for everyone to see, and the streets are there to stroll. Thank you for our memories of that Christmas 2003 and so much more.
