Music, movies and holiday fun make season bright

SANDPOINT — Merry Christmas — almost! ‘Tis the season and the calendar bears that out, as Sandpoint and the surrounding environs fairly teem with activity.

The PSNI Christmas Market is still going strong (it ends on Sunday) with great gift ideas that support a wonderful cause, and, starting Friday night, the Panida begins a 14-day run of the new film, ‘Welcome to Marwen.’

Also Friday, the 219 Lounge celebrates Winter Solstice with a host a dark brews and live music, while Sadie Sicilia makes a welcome appearance at Matchwood Brewing that same evening.

Saturday brings the Christmas Bird Count and the new Davis Market in Hope will host Convoy of Hope — a fundraiser with live music. Also Saturday, it’s the annual Evans Brothers Coffee Roasters Procrastinators’ Holiday Fair, with superb last-minute gift ideas and live music by Bright Moments. Saturday night, it’s Sandpoint’s cool, new band, The Wow Wows onstage at MickDuff’s Beer Hall.

Christmas Eve — already a lovely time — is made more magical with Santa’s Balloon parade up at Schweitzer.

PSNI Christmas Market

‘Welcome to Marwen’

Venue: Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 5:30 p.m.

Putting together pieces from his old and new life, Mark meticulously creates a wondrous town where he can heal and be heroic. As he builds an astonishing art installation--a testament to the most powerful women he knows — through his fantasy world, he draws strength to triumph in the real one.

Sadie Sicilia

Venue: Matchwood Brewing Co., 513 Oak St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 6:30-9:30 p.m.

Sadie Sicilia sings everything from ‘40s jazz classics to Led Zeppelin and also writes her own music. Her vocals have been compared to Adele, Bonnie Raitt, and Lady Gaga.

Laney Lou & the Bird Dogs and Solstice celebration

Venue: 219 Lounge, 219 First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 3-9 p.m. for dark beers; music starts at 9 p.m.

Celebrate the shortest and darkest day of the year as the Niner features 10 different barrel-aged stouts and porters on draft from some of the top breweries in the region.

Award-winning Bozeman band Laney Lou & the Bird Dogs combine a soaring four-part harmony and rock ‘n’ roll.

The Wow Wows

Venue: MickDuff’s Beer Hall, 220 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 6:30-9:30 p.m.

Newly formed North Idaho local band The Wow Wows feature a self-described alternative indie psych rock featuring Casey Calhoun, Hunter Jones, Dyllan Darrington and Jen Javana. Their sound lives in a comfortable place somewhere between surf rock, indie pump and alt-rock.

Bart Budwig Band

Venue: 219 Lounge, 219 First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Budwig who grew up on the Palouse, doesn’t write big songs. He writes about places between the hills, in the draws and hidden canyons where truth is a little more in focus, stories take their time being told, heartbreak is a place of deep reflection, and melodies don’t have to wear rhinestone suits or drive shiny, new cars to be beautiful.

Santa’s Balloon Parade

Venue: Schweitzer Mountain Resort

Time: 1:45 p.m.

Meet up with the jolly ol’ man himself and Mrs. Claus at the top of Basin Express at 1:45 p.m., get a balloon, and ski down at 2 p.m. Following the parade, Santa heads to the Selkirk Lodge lobby for photos and to hear last-minute wishes from kids young and old! Hot cocoa and cookies will be served.
