Boating skills, seamanship course being offered in area

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Lake Pend Oreille Flotilla 87, is offering its annual Boating Skills and Seamanship course every Monday night through April 9. It is the most detailed course offered by the Auxiliary. Classes start promptly at 7 p.m. and run until 9:30 p.m.

The course will cover navigation, charting, mechanics, rules of the road, courtesies and customs, seamanship, lines and knots, principles of sailing, terminology, safety procedures, and more. Certificates are presented upon completion of course examination. Most insurance companies offer a discount on boat insurance to policy holders who have certification. Class fee includes manual and test materials.

The class will be limited to 20 students. Preregistration is suggested. To register please contact the Sandpoint Recreation Department at 208-263-3613. The fee is $75 per student.

The class will be given at the U.S. Forest Service Building, 1602 Ontario St, Sandpoint.
