Cometto signs letter of intent to play baseball at Oregon Tech

SANDPOINT — With plus speed an range, great hand-eye coordination and a strong work ethic, Sandpoint senior Jacob Cometto will be taking his talents to the next level, signing a letter of intent on Monday to play baseball next season for Oregon Tech in Klamath Falls.
Cometto, who plays centerfield for the Bulldogs, plans to study renewable energy at the NAIA school that plays in the Cascade Collegiate Conference.
He’s been playing baseball since he was a kid, and can’t wait to see if he can help the Owls, who went 18-29 last year, and to see how his skills translate to the college game. He said it means a lot to know he gets to keep playing his favorite sport.
“I’ve been preparing since T-Ball. I love baseball, just hearing that I get to play college ball is a big deal to me,” said Cometto. “New sights and experiences, get a new perspective on baseball and the level of competition.”
Cometto is a tough out at the plate, and a live bat and wheels on the bases make him a threat to go extra bases on balls put in play. He’ll be a key piece of one of the most talented Sandpoint baseball teams in years this spring, hoping to end his high school career on a high note.
Bulldog head coach Chase Tigert has seen the work Cometto puts in, and calls the chance to play in college an incredible opportunity.
“Jake has an extremely high level of work ethic and dedication. He’s going to have a really successful college career,” predicted Tigert. “He has a lot of strength, speed, great range in the outfield, a strong arm and a willingness to learn. He’s very easy to coach and willing to make adjustments. Those things will help him at the next level.”
