Spartans drop district opener to Timberlake

COEUR d’ALENE — McKeeley Tonkin scored 14 points and 11 players scored as the top-seeded Timberlake Tigers beat the fourth-seeded Priest River Spartans 75-20 in the first round of the 3A District 1 girls basketball tournament Monday at North Idaho College’s Rolly Williams Court.

Defending champion Timberlake (18-3) is ranked No. 2 in the state.

Priest River (4-17) will face second-seeded Bonners Ferry (16-5) on Wednesday at 4:30 at NIC in a loser-out game.

Jasmine Martin led Priest River with nine points.

ends with loss to Badgers

COEUR d’ALENE — Miranda Wenk scored 19 points with 10 rebounds to lead the No. 2 seed Badgers (17-5) past the No. 4 seed Spartans (4-18) by the score of 70-22 in a district loser-out game at North Idaho College.

It was a rebuilding year for the young Spartans, who will return a host of players with varsity experience next season.

n Spartan boys fall to NIC

PRIEST RIVER — Garrett White had 32 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots as the North Idaho Christian Royals beat the Spartans 69-45 in nonleague boys basketball recently in Priest River.

Cross Pilgrim had 20 points, seven assists and five rebounds for North Idaho Christian (25-1), a beast in the Mountain Christian League.

Sophomore guard Caden Brennan scored 19 points for Priest River (2-16).

KELLOGG — Chase Jerome scored 19 points for the Wildcats in a 62-38 Intermountain League win over the Spartans at Andrews Gymnasium.

Brennan Atkins scored 13 points for Kellogg (13-3, 4-0 IML).

Keegan Hegel and Caden Brennan scored 10 points each for Priest River (2-17, 0-5).

n Spartan grapplers sixth at Bonners Ferry tourney

BONNERS FERRY — Aaron Reyes pinned his Post Falls opponent in the second round, claiming the lone title for the Spartans at 220 pounds at the recent Bonners Ferry Invitational.

Lakeland, with a mix of varsity and JV wrestlers, finished with seven champions to run away with the team title.

Riley DeMent lost a tough 6-5 decision in the 138 pound final, and Larry Naccarato was second at 145 for the Spartans, who turn their attention to the upcoming district tournament on Feb. 17 at Lakeland High School.
