Patricia 'Patty' Palmer-Douglas, 80

Patricia “Patty” Palmer-Douglas, 80, a long-time resident of Sandpoint, passed away in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, on Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2018.

A viewing will be held in her honor from 2-5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2018, at the Lakeview Funeral Home, 301 S. Olive Ave., in Sandpoint.

Patricia Darlene Palmer was born on Oct. 27, 1937 in Miami, Fla., to Harry and Martha Palmer. She grew up in Miami and attended Coral Gables High School. After high school, Patty married Billy Webb Thompson. The couple had a daughter and named her Darlene Lynna Thompson. Patty went back to school and earned her EMT license. She enjoyed working on an ambulance and working as a paralegal for an attorney’s office.

Later she married Paul Douglas, who was an airline pilot, and the couple enjoyed traveling together. One of their trips took them to Sandpoint, Idaho, to visit Patty’s best friend, Beverly Ragland. That trip inspired Patty to move to North Idaho in the early ’80s.

Patty loved boating, traveling, reading and researching, and while living in a small town in North Idaho she focused her attention on local and state politics. Her research led her on a constant fight for justice and the protection of property rights and liberty as an advocate to help others. Gathering information and voicing her opinions defined her as a person. In her pursuit for justice, Patty once ran for Bonner County sheriff. Patty also ran for Bonner County commissioner twice.

In 2004, she was the Democratic nominee for the state senator legislative district one. When learning of her passing, a local attorney stated, “We will miss a gem of a person.”

Patty is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Donald K. Palmer; and great-granddaughter, Summer Alvarnas.

She is survived by her daughter, Darlene Williams of Kannapolis, N.C.; sister, Bette Zulick of Bocaraton, Fla.; grandson, James (Bo) Ward of APO, Maryland; granddaughter, Lynna (Barry) King of Kannapolis; three great-grandchildren, Tanner, Corey, and Alyssa Alvarnas; nephews, David (Elaine) Zulick of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Stephen (Helen Dawn) Zulick of New Jersey; nieces Debra Palmer of Miami, Fla., and Diane Perry of Lake Worth, Fla.; and will be missed by many of her closest friends.
