SMOKING PROBLEM NEAR SCHOOL

Smoking by students near Sandpoint Junior High (Euclid and Pine) was discussed by the City council Monday. School students were reported smoking in stores near the school and Fire Chief Art Chubb confirmed that a shed fire on private property near the school was due to smokers.

The council wants action and police will be instructed to follow through on possession, a misdemeanor punishable by a fine not over $100 and not under $50 for each offense. Councilmen realize that with the prevalence of smoking, almost in every home, it is tough for a youngster to reach physical and mental maturity without being somehow subjected to smoking, but as one member put it, “They ought to have a chance to reach 18 before they start smoking.”
