PSNI to raffle new log bed
Thanks to a generous donation from Northwest Handmade Furniture, the volunteers at The Cottage, 1410 N. Boyer, are holding a raffle for one lucky winner to go home with a brand-new log bed. The raffle is being held from now until March 19 with tickets only $5 each or 3 for $10. All proceeds benefit Panhandle Special Needs, Inc. client programs.
The Cottage, if you’ve never been there, is a unique thrift store featuring items for home and garden. It’s located in a house that was built in the early 1900s.
“All this land around here was dedicated to experimental farms,” Lois Miller, PSNI board member and volunteer, said. “This was the caretaker’s house and there was nothing else around here but fields. Since it became a thrift store we’ve had lots of folks come in and tell us stories about how they lived here, or babysat the children who lived here. It’s very interesting.”
What’s also interesting is that The Cottage is run totally by volunteers with all proceeds, except for rent and utilities of course, going to benefit the clients of Panhandle Special Needs. Miller says that there are between 20 and 25 dedicated volunteers who make sure all the merchandise is up to their standards of quality and priced to sell.
PSNI provides training and opportunities for our developmentally disabled community in several areas aimed at helping the individuals achieve their highest level of independence. Instruction in caring for themselves involves learning skills such as grooming, doing laundry, learning to shop for and cook meals, budgeting and housekeeping.
They’re also taught time management and communication skills, social skills and how to be self-directed. With an eye on public sector employment, they’re taught customer service skills and how to meet deadlines.
The Adult Day Health Services provides healthy, supportive, safe and socially stimulating programs that incorporate music and therapeutic exercises; recreational opportunities as well as arts and crafts.
Raffle tickets are also available at The Cottage, at All About Chimneys 468215 Hwy. 95, Sagle and at Eve’s Leaves, 326 N. First Avenue. For more information call 208-255-7800. If you have gently used home furnishings and garden items that you would like to donate, The Cottage is always seeking donations. They don’t accept appliances, clothes or electronics.
