Warm up winter with carnival's slate of music, fun

SANDPOINT – Concerts, comedy shows, dances, Winter Carnival action and Oscar-nominated films top the A&E action this week.

Satur-day’s full slate features a show by the Valinor Quartet at the Panida, plus a Winter Carnival 5K fun run in Dover and night ski parade and fireworks at Schweitzer. On Sunday, start your day with the K-9 Keg pull – always great family fun.

Looking into next week, we’ve got the 16th annual Follies on March 2 and 3 and (shameless promotion) the Bridges Home Trio at long last gets out of the recording studio to play live on March 2 at the Pend d’Oreille Winery.

Thursday, Feb. 22

FSPW ‘Wilderness Trivia Contest’

Venue: MickDuff’s Beer Hall, 220 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: No-host pizza and beer from 6-8 p.m., contest starts at 7 p.m.

This first ever Wilderness Trivia Night will feature four-person teams. Beer and pizza sales, entry fees, point purchases, raffles and judge bribes will all benefit Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness.

Admission: $5 team buy-in.

Trivia Takeover

Venue: Pend d’Oreille Winery, 301 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 5:30-7 p.m.

A new event for the winery, come check it out.

Admission: Free, open to the public.

‘Darkest Hour’

Venue: Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Nominated for 6 Oscars. During the early days of World War II, the fate of Western Europe hangs on the newly-appointed British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who must decide whether to negotiate with Adolf Hitler or fight on against incredible odds.

Friday, Feb. 23

‘Darkest Hour’

Venue: Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 5:30 p.m.

Nominated for 6 Oscars. During the early days of World War II, the fate of Western Europe hangs on the newly-appointed British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who must decide whether to negotiate with Adolf Hitler or fight on against incredible odds.

Bright Moments Jazz

Venue: Eichardt’s Pub, 212 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7-10 p.m.

There’s music – and there’s the kind of transcendent music played by this top-drawer, local jazz band. Put this one on your must-do calendar.

Moses Willey

Venue: MickDuff’s Beer Hall, 220 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 6:30 p.m.

Moses Willey was born deep in the heart of the Great North Woods, high on the peak of a musical note. They form a special place where the lines between Traditional Bluegrass, Folk, and Appalachian mix together in a mist of stylistic and idiosyncratic interpretations.

Truck Mills

Venue: Pend d’Oreille Winery, 301 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 5-8 p.m.

Do not miss this multi-instrumentalist and singer – a great night of blues and more.

Dimestore Prophets

Venue: 219 Lounge, 219 First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 9 p.m.

Bringing a diversity of musical influences and their own style of Feel Good Music to the 219 for the first time in several years, Dimestore Prophets is a three-piece groove, rock, reggae band influenced by Bob Marley to Sublime, the Clash and Dirty Heads.

Meg Turner & Chris Lynch

Saturday, Feb. 24

Winter Carnival ‘Frozen 5K’ Fun Run

Venue: The Dover Barn in West Dover Bay.

Time: 10 a.m.

As part of the Sandpoint Winter Carnival, come out and enjoy the Frozen 5K Run. Meet up at the Dover Bay Barn and join the fun! Waivers must be signed before participating.

Admission: $5 entry fee.

The Valinor Quartet

Venue: Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 6:30 p.m.

Valinor Quartet is a unique collaboration between a Grammy winning accordionist Victor Prieto and the International String Trio — Slava Tolstoy (guitar), Rob Flax (violin) and Greg Feingold (bass). The all acoustic group’s riveting displays utilize a breathtaking range of styles – from classical to Beatles; from Gypsy Jazz to Klezmer, from popular movie soundtracks to Tango and a few surprises in between.

Live Comedy

Venue: 219 Lounge, 219 First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: Doors at 7 p.m., show starts at 8 p.m.

It’s another great night of live comedy featuring Jonas Barnes and headliner Jessa Reed with Morgan Preston as host. After the show, DJ Josh will be spinning all your favorite tunes from 10:30 p.m. until 1:30 a.m.

Admission: $10 in advance — available at the 219 Lounge, Trinity at City Beach and Jalapeno’s — $12 at the door for those 21 and over.

‘Let It Glow!’ Night Parade & Fireworks

Venue: Schweitzer Mountain Resort

Time: Events run from 3 p.m.-6 p.m.

Schweitzer Mountain celebrates over Presidents’ Weekend with the Coca Cola Let it Glow! kids parade and fireworks show. Also at Taps, enjoy music with the Dimestore Prophets from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m.

Social Dance

Venue: Sandpoint Community Hall, 204 S. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7-10 p.m.

This fun event starts with a one-hour Beginning rumba lesson taught by a local professional instructor from 7-8 p.m., followed by general dancing, refreshments, door prizes, mixers, and a drawing for one month of free dance lessons. Singles, couples and all levels of dancers are welcome.

Admission: $9 adults, $6 members and $5 teens. USA Dance events are alcohol and tobacco free.

Winter Carnival K-9 Keg Pull

Venue: The Granary (next to Evan’s Brothers Coffee Roasters on Church St.)

Time: Registration starting at 9 a.m., races going until noon

One of Sandpoint’s most popular events, Eichardt’s annual K-9 Keg Pull is held at the Granary with dogs of all sizes racing down a snow-packed course pulling anywhere from full-size kegs to beer cans for a cheering crowd. A neighborhood coffee tasting at Evans Brothers Coffee takes place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. also includes hot chocolate for the kids and live music. A great, local, family friendly event!

Admission: Free and open to the public. Keg Pull $10 entry fee donation goes to the Panhandle Animal Shelter.

Truck Mills

Famed Sandpoint musician Truck Mills and a special guest will be jamming at the Niner! Come out and chill out with friends to great blues, folk, gospel and jazz tunes.

Open Mic Night

Venue: Skal Tap Room, 476930 U.S. Hwy. 95 (next to Sandpoint Sports), in Ponderay.

Time: 5-8 p.m., Wednesdays

Friday, March 2

Angels Over Sandpoint present 16th annual ‘Follies’

Venue: Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: Doors open at 7 p.m. and the variety show starts at 8 p.m. (An additional show is scheduled for March 3)

This is the largest fundraiser of the year for the Angels — an event that specializes in a spectacle of the politically incorrect variety. The Follies are Rated R for risky, racy and risqué — these shows are ‘not for the easily offended’ — and you must be 21 or over to attend.

Admission: $25 each (if not sold out), available at Eichardt’s, Petal Talk or at the door (if not sold out). Online tickets have been sold out for both performances.

Bridges Home Trio

Venue: Pend d’Oreille Winery, 301 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 5-8 p.m.
