Feb. 25, 1968 — FREE THROW WINNERS

After a final competition during halftime of Saturday’s varsity basketball game, three boys were named division champions in the annual free throw shooting contest sponsored by the Sandpoint High athletic department. Earning trophies were Mickey Pederson, 6th grade, Barry Crandell, 5th grade and Gary Ridley, 4th grade.

SKI AREA TO RUN UNLESS TOO MILD

Schweitzer Basin ski area did not operate Monday or Tuesday due to rising temperatures and continued rains, but was back in operation Wednesday. Short of a marked change in the weather, all facilities were expected to operate through the Washington’s birthday weekend, which normally draws the year’s largest crowds.

PETITIONS TO HALT COMMUNIST TRADE

More than 600 Bonner County citizens have signed VIVID petitions. VIVID stands for “Victory in Vietnam Instead of Defeat.” Nationally over 1 million signatures have been secured and are being presented to Congress urging both houses “to exert their authority and use their influence in all honorable ways to have this administration stop, promptly and completely, giving aid, directly or indirectly, to our Communist enemies.”

Anyone wishing to help in the effort may get additional petitions from Sally Schatz, Athol, or Herb Oliver at the Basin on N. Fifth, Sandpoint.

Pend d’Oreille Review

Feb. 25, 1918 — PERMITS FOR SEINING

Governor Alexander’s recent proclamation allows the seining of fish in the Clarksfork and Pend d’Oreille rivers. Idaho residents only may get seining permits from the state game dept. at the cost of one dollar. Fish thus taken may be salted, smoked, dried or canned in the state and marketed within the confines of the state.

ICE HARVEST IS ON

After despairing of securing an ice harvest from the lake and ordering his supply from Blanchard, John Selle of the Sandpoint Ice & Fuel company thanks the recent cold snap for his ability to cancel his order. He expects to start tomorrow to gather a fine supply of ice from the lake. The present is the first opportunity of the winter to lay in an ice supply. From present indications the ice will be about eight inches thick and fine in quality.

THIRD LIBERTY LOAN TO HIT HARD HERE

George N. Rooker has been appointed chairman for Bonner county in the spring Liberty Loan drive which the government is scheduling for April. The prevailing opinion is that the next loan will be eight billion dollars, as against three billion asked for in the last drive. This will mean that Bonner county will have to subscribe for at least $450,000 worth of bonds as compared to $160,000 last time.
