POSTHUMOUS AWARDS ON BIRTHDAY

Warrant Officer Glen Shropshire’s Dec. 27 birth date was noted by posthumous awards of two medals to his widow Cheryl Shropshire and her children, Phillip, age one, and Mindi, one month.

The Army Commendation Medal cites exceptionally meritorious service in a counter insurgency effort in Vietnam, when outstanding professional competence and devotion to duty inspired his associates. The Air Medal citation states Shropshire distinguished himself by “meritorious achievement while participating in sustained aerial flight in support of ground forces” in dozens of aerial missions over hostile territory.

Jan. 7, 1918 — MALONEY LEGALLY DEAD

LIGHTNING CREEK GOES ON RAMPAGE

Lightning creek has gone “hellwest and crooked” and another foot or two of water may force the creek’s channel through the Clarksfork village. The county bridge across the creek, just west of village, was left high and dry with the change of the stream’s course 50 feet to the east. The east approach to the bridge was washed out. The stream is about five feet higher than it has ever been before in a winter or spring freshet.
