Hazel Irene (Bratton) Roop, 98

| January 19, 2018 12:00 AM

Hazel Roop, born Hazel Irene Bratton, was born in Lemoore, Calif., on Oct. 16, 1919 and passed away on Saturday Jan. 13, 2018 at Life Care Center of Sandpoint, Idaho. She was surrounded by her family and passed peacefully. Hazel was raised on a dairy farm where she met her husband (Tex) when he came in with her uncle Frank. Frank left the next spring but Hazel, although only 16 at the time, decided that Tex needed to stay, and they spent the next 62 years together.

Hazel and Tex raised their family of 5 amid family near Kettlemen City and Santa Cruz, Calif. They moved to Cocolalla, Idaho, in 1964 and built their family homestead where much of their large and sprawling family still remains.

Hazel loved North Idaho and surrounded herself with the things she loved — animals, gardening, crochet, and her family. She was known for her extensive knowledge of sad cowboy songs, which she sang with her children until her passing even as her other words failed her.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ermer (Tex) Roop, brothers Charlie, Stanley and Bob, sisters Eva, Florence, and Babe, son Dustan, Daughter-in-law Heidi, and grandson Ed.

She is survived by her sons Dink, Jerry, and Frank, daughter Pat, inlaws Sue, Patty, Barbara, and Bill, Grandchildren Buck, Mike, Becky, Jake, Rebecca, Sarah, Danny, Donel, Yvonne, Cindy, Jason, Tammy, Lee, Stacey, Adrian, Beth, Trisha, Katrina, Amanda, and Texas; 47 Great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to sign Hazel’s online guestbook at www.coffeltfuneral.com.

Final details are being handled by Coffelt Funeral Service.
