In this current session of the Idaho Legislature, lawmakers will consider a proposed amendment to the Idaho Constitution to enhance and strengthen the rights of crime victims. These are the parents, siblings and spouses who through no fault of their own have been thrown into the sometimes confusing and daunting world of our justice system.

A resolution called Marsy’s Law for Idaho would build on the Victims Rights Amendment that Idaho voters approved in 1994. It would bolster the rights of victims and give them a stronger voice as the offender’s case moves through the legal process.

While critics contend implementing Marsy’s Law would be too pricey, a recent economic study determined costs would be negligible. Even so, I believe those costs are worth it to better the standing and protections in place for crime victims.

Written by Idahoans to suit our state’s needs, Marsy’s Law for Idaho has won the endorsement of law enforcement and victim coordinators and advocates. Now it’s time for Idaho legislators to get on board. So, I urge each of you to contact our legislators, leaders like Rep. Vito Barbieri, and let them know we can and must do more for victims of crime.
