Chancellor hints at retirement
SEATTLE — Seattle Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor seems to have said he is done playing football in the NFL.
The Seahawks safety posted a message on Twitter Sunday indicating that the serious neck injury he suffered last season hasn’t healed enough for him to risk playing in 2018.
“My final test showed no healing,” Chancellor said in the post. He indicated his concern of paralysis factored into his decision.
Notably, Chancellor did not announce he was officially retiring. By not officially retiring, Chancellor’s salary of $6.8 million for the 2018 season and $5.2 million in 2019 remains guaranteed. He would forfeit that money if he officially retired.
A fifth-round pick (No. 133) in 2010, the strong safety teamed with free safety Earl Thomas and left cornerback Richard Sherman to form the “Legion of Boom,” helping the Seahawks field one of the league’s best defenses from 2011 to 2016. Chancellor spent his entire career with the Seahawks.
Chancellor’s decision continues the transformation of the Seahawks defense. Sherman was released and signed with the San Francisco 49ers in March. Defensive end Michael Bennett was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in March and defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson signed with the Minnesota Vikings. Thomas is holding out in a contract dispute and could be traded.
