Water steward workshops are on tap
The Selkirk Alliance for Science, Kalispel Tribe Natural Resources Department, and University of Idaho Extension invites citizen volunteers to participate in an IDAH2O master water steward workshop.
The workshop will be held on July 21, 2018, at the Kalispel Camas Center in Cusick, Wash. Participants will learn how to assess the quality of water in northeast Washington streams, lakes, and ponds.
U-Idaho Extension Educator Jim Elkins will lead three hours of classroom instruction and four hours of hands-on study in a small stream. Attendees will discover how to characterize the biological, chemical, and physical properties of water habitats. With this training, volunteers could assess waters on public land or their own property, add valuable information to our local water quality database, and have fun in the process. The IDAH2O protocol can be used in K-12 classrooms. Master water stewards will have access to monitoring kits, technical guidance, periodic newsletters, and peer networking.
Pre-registration is required, and the workshop costs $40 per person for instruction materials. A partial scholarship might be available to anyone with interest, commitment, and financial need. For questions about a scholarship, email Elly Styskel at ellystyskel@gmail.com. For questions about the workshop, contact Jan Wood at jwoodnewport@gmail.com or 509-630-3962.
