Man drowns in river
A 65-year-old Bonner County man drowned Saturday when he fell out of his canoe on a fast moving stretch of the Priest River. According to a Bonner County sheriff’s Office press release, Lawrence Fryberg fell victim to the river that is running higher and faster than usual, catching canoeists and kayakers off guard.

Car club comes to town
The National Model T Ford Club will come to Priest River on Monday, July 13. The club is holding its convention in Post Falls and has picked five cities in the area to tour each day. Priest River was selected for its historical downtown area. The club will arrive around 11 a.m. and exhibit the cars on Main and High streets.

Groundbreaking at PRLHS set
Last Thursday Panco Construction president Sam Sahnow signed his name on the contract to begin the projected work at Priest River Lamanna High School. District Superintendent Ed Humble said, “The groundbreaking is set for July 15 at 10 a.m. and I certainly hope everyone will attend.”

Celebration

Gov. John Evans will put in his appearance at the 31st Annual Priest River Logger’s Celebration, riding in the parade “and getting out to meet the people and do some handshaking,” according to Tom Jachetta, Panhandle Area Council coordinator. Logger’s Day chairman Arlyn Duncan said that U. S. Sen. James McClure and Rep. Steven D. Symms were likely to show up also for a little old-fashioned electioneering.

Belwood awarded
Sp/5 Ernest C. Belwood, Jr., has been awarded the Air Medal of Honor in Viet Nam. He “distinguished himself by meritorious achievement while participating in sustained aerial flight in support of combat forces in the Republic of Viet Nam during the period from the 7th of November to the 27th of November 1967.” The citation was signed by Gen. W. C. Westmoreland.

Carol Falk selected
Miss Carol Falk, Priest River, has been selected as the queen of the Swedish Midsummer Festival to be held in Coeur d’ Alene City Park on Sunday July 20. Miss Falk is a graduate of Priest River High School and has been very active in school and 4-H work. She was the Idaho state Achievement Winner delegate to the National 4-H club congress in Chicago in 1957 and was selected as one of the princesses to represent this community in the Miss Priest River contest.

Logging contractor injured
M. E. Griffith, logging contractor, was brought into the Priest River hospital in more or less of a battered condition. Mr. Griffith states that he was in the act of hooking up a trace when the team he was driving decided otherwise. They backed over him, and not being satisfied with that procedure, bolted forward and again trod Mr. Griffith into the earth.
Prisoner of war
Mr. and Mrs. O. A. Miller have received word that their son, Thomas O. Miller, is a prisoner of war in the Philippines. He was a gunner on a cruiser before having left Pearl Harbor before that fateful day of Dec. 7. He was transferred to a minesweeper that went down off the coast of Corregidor, the personnel being transferred to Corregidor.

Theo Hill has filed for state representative on the Republican ticket, and Calvin Huff, Jr., a resident of the Blue Lake district, has also filed on the Republican ticket for county commissioner.

Oh, those Fords
Warren White, the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Otto White, had the misfortune of breaking his wrist while cranking the Ford car. The arm was set by Dr. Lowther.

Woman’s suffrage debated on Fourth
The Fourth of July was fittingly celebrated in Nordman by a picnic at VanDever landing. The ladies Red Cross society had prepared a grab bag and ice cream, the proceeds from which netted about $9.50. The national song was sung by the crowd, and the ladies held a debate on woman’s suffrage. The afternoon was filled in with boat riding on the beautiful lake. The day was finished off with a dance at the new hotel building of the Nickel Plate mine that lasted until daybreak.
