Bruhjell killed in SR935 crash
CLAYTON, Wash. — A Sandpoint man was killed in a head-on crash on State Route 395 north of Spokane on Friday, according to the Washington State Patrol.
Troopers said in a news release that Rebecca A. Clemmer was northbound on the highway when she crossed into the southbound lane of travel and into the path of an oncoming vehicle. The driver of the southbound vehicle, Erik Robin Bruhjell, tried to avoid the collision, but Clemmer’s Chevrolet Cruze collided with Bruhjell’s Mazda MZ3 on the southbound shoulder.
Bruhjell, 22, was fatally injured in the collision and Clemmer, a 42-year-old Inchelium, Wash., resident, was taken to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, according to WSP.
Both motorists were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision, the state patrol said.
WSP Trooper Jeff Sevigney posted a message to Twitter indicating that Clemmer is in custody for vehicular homicide. Alcohol was a factor in the crash, state troopers said.
Bruhjell is a recent graduate of Gonzaga University. As a Sandpoint High School student, Bruhjell founded the SHS Human Rights Club and was a member of the Interact Club, a student Rotary organization.
The crash occurred in the town of Clayton at 6:36 p.m., troopers said. Clayton is approximately 30 miles north of Spokane.
