Historic building workshop set

| June 3, 2018 1:00 AM

SANDPOINT — Need help fixing up your historic building? The city of Sandpoint’s Historic Preservation Commission wants you to know your project could be eligible for a 20 percent federal tax credit.

The commission is co-hosting a free public workshop on restoring historic buildings using tax credits. The workshop will take place June 9, 10-11:30 a.m. in the Community Hall Building.

Owners of buildings in National Register of Historic Places Districts often ask about ways they can get financial assistance to rehab their historic properties, according to commission member Carrie Logan.

One of the most useful and successful programs to help them is the Federal Historic Rehabilitation Tax Incentive program. The program provides owners a tax credit of up to 20 percent of qualifying rehab costs on their income producing buildings. Commercial, industrial, and rental residential can all potentially qualify, Stapleton said.

Staff from the Idaho State Historic Preservation Office will walk participants through the basics of the program and help them understand how they can take advantage of the program.

The workshop is being offered by the Idaho State Historic Preservation Office and the city of Sandpoint Historic Preservation Commission.
