Davis signs to run track at Spokane Falls CC

SANDPOINT — Sandpoint senior three-sport athlete T.J. Davis will take his raw speed and skills to the next level, signing a letter of intent this week to do the decathlon next season at Spokane Falls Community College.

Davis, who used his lithe 6-foot-6 frame and jumping ability to excel as a receiver in football, a post in basketball and a hurdler in track and field, is loaded with potential, and will get expert tutelage from SFCC hurdles coach Linda Lanker, known as one of the best in the business.

Davis broke a 63 year-old Sandpoint record when he clocked a 14.65 in the 110 high hurdles, where he was a three-time Regional champion in the event. He also excelled at the 300 hurdles and on relays, and could be an intriguing decathlon prospect with some college coaching in new events.

He missed most of his junior track season with an injury, and was primed to win a state title in the 110 hurdles last month, but clipped a hurdle late and was disqualified after building a sizable lead in the finals. How he handled the setback spoke volumes to his coach, who feels he’s got a bright future.

“He was recruited for the decathlon, a perfect choice for T.J.’s athleticism. Over his four years he has been incredibly rewarding to coach,” said Matt Brass. “He enjoys and looks for challenges, while always keeping a smile and great perspective.”
