SANDPOINT — A Clark Fork man was arrested for allegedly threatening a man with a knife outside Clark Fork High School on Friday.

Daniel William Meyers is charged with aggravated assault. He made an initial appearance in Bonner County Magistrate Court via video link with the Bonner County Jail on Monday.

Judge Tera Harden appointed a public defender to represent him and entered an order forbidding him from contact the alleged victim in the case.

Meyers, 55, was spotted making stabbing gestures with a knife at a playground fence as two students were about to pass through an opening in the fence, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Another witness who was alerted to Meyers’ presence began following the man. The affidavit said Meyers pivoted around and brandished the knife at his pursuer.

Meyers walked away from the scene, but was arrested a short while later, according to court documents. Meyers said he opened the folding knife because he felt threatened by the man who was pursuing him, the affidavit said.

“I didn’t come within 50 feet of anyone,” Meyers said in court.

Meyers added that all he did was open his knife and he would not have done so had he known the trouble it would cause.

Bonner County Deputy Prosecutor William Wilson recommended bail be set at $10,000 due to the concerning circumstances of the allegations, while Deputy Public Defender Catherine Enright doubted Meyers posed a threat to the community.

“The allegations in this case are concerning to the court,” Harden said as she set Meyers’ bail at $2,500.

A preliminary hearing in the case is set for June 20.
