I am writing in response to Marlene in Sandpoint who apparently supports the previously proposed wilderness designation of the Scotchman Peak area. This subject has been debated ad nauseam in both letters to the editor, as well as featured articles in this paper.

Whereas I respect the opinions to make this area a wilderness for the many listed reasons made in this paper, the arguments were unpersuasive to the majority of informed Bonner County voters, particularly those of us in the Clark Fork area who enjoy the use of this area both on foot as well as on our various ATV-type vehicles. Many of us are retired and not in the peak health that we might have been earlier in life but still enjoy experiencing the nearby wilderness areas.

Perhaps, rather than attempting to create ill will towards our commissioners for disagreeing with your opinion on this topic, Marlene, everyone should be thankful that they acted on the opinion of the majority of voters and not on their own opinions in clear disregard to the voters’ sentiments.

I moved here from western Washington where county commissioners often made decisions contrary to the voter’s expressed will. I am very thankful for our commissioners concern for representing the will of the majority of their constituents.
