OLDTOWN — They don't call it "Run Whatcha Brung" for no reason.

The ninth annual event is coming up and everyone is encouraged to do just that, run whatever they brung, because when it comes to the drag races in Oldtown, every motorcycle is welcome. Event organizer Algie Pirrello even encourages those who have never drag raced before to get out there and give it a try.

"It usually takes three, maybe four times till you really get the hang of it," Pirrello said.

And those who sign up have the option to race several times throughout the day, giving them plenty of time to get the hang of it. The only rule, he said, is there are no rules.

The drag races are not the only action to be had, as there will be a bike show, as well as plenty of vendors and "lots of good food and good drinks," Pirrello said. And for those who need a place to stay, camping is available in town.

There will also be a guest star at the event this year as Rusty Coones, a member of the Hells Angels who starred as Rane Quinn on the show "Sons of Anarchy," will be there, signing posters and taking photos with the crowd. He will also be judging the annual bike show that is held during the event.

Pirrello said the event started in 2009 after moving his business, Killing Machine Choppers, to a shop located at the spot that became the starting line is for the drag races on North Idaho Street.

"It was a spinoff from the lawnmower races," he said, referring to the Big Back-in lawnmower race circuit, which is now in its 18th year. "That's how we got the motorcycle races started there."

While his shop has since relocated, "Run Whatcha Brung" is still an Oldtown staple, attracting racers and spectators alike.

Things will get rolling around 11 a.m. Saturday, July 7, on North Idaho Street.
