June 28, 1968 — SOLDIER ASKS HELP

A soldier destined for Vietnam who lost his address book has appealed to his friends to write him so that he can put together a new one.

SP3 Gary Beauchene lost his address book between San Francisco and Vietnam and believes if his friends see this story they will write him and he will get a new book started. His name and address in full: SP3 Gary E. Beauchene, RA1899-1235, 173 Engineer Co., 173 Airborn Bde, APO San Francisco, Calif. 96250.

SIDEWALKS MUST BE KEPT FREE

Placing merchandise on sidewalks for display or sale is contrary to city ordinance, Mayor Floyd Gray and City Clerk Ken Hackworth said this week. The object of the law is safety. Sidewalks free of obstructions are safer to walk on.

Merchants have placed everything from lawn fertilizer to used cars on sidewalks, the city officials pointed out. Businesses are asked to refrain from further use of walks for this purpose.

MIDNIGHT FIRE STRIKES MOTEL

Fire gutted two apartment units at Ed’s Motel, Marion and Dover road, at 12:30 a.m. June 20.

The blaze was located on Marion in a building, apart from the regular overnight units of the motel. Ed Mikesell is the motel’s owner.

MILLION DOLLAR RAIN SUNDAY

The Inland Empire was visited by a million dollar rain Sunday. The rainfall was general all through northern Idaho and did a world of good in assisting the firefighters as well as helping out growing crops which were badly in need of moisture. Local gardens “perked up” considerably with the rain.

The demonstration farm reported .61 inch rain.

MUST PROVE NEED OF CANNING SUGAR

Food Administration Earl D. Farmin this morning received a message from State Administrator Bicknell, Boise, as follows:

You may issue sugar permits for home canning in excess of 25 pounds and not to exceed 100 pounds, upon a showing by the consumer of the actual possession of fruit requiring the amount of sugar applied for. The consumer must at all times be prepared to show it was used for canning only.

CITY LIVERY CHANGES OWNERSHIP

A deal was this week closed in which Thomas Elliott disposed of the City livery and Pacific transfer business to O.V. Cable. Mr. Cable has been in and about Sandpoint since last fall, having come here from the vicinity of Idaho Falls. Mr. Elliott has as yet no plans for the future.
