Pettit to play baseball at Southern Virginia University

SANDPOINT — Bringing plenty of versatility and athletic tools to the diamond, Sandpoint senior Preston Pettit plans to play at the next level, recently signing a letter of intent to play baseball next season for Southern Virginia University.
Pettit, who was injured in the first game last season after breaking his collarbone in an outfield collision, will be a key member of the Bulldog baseball team this year. He was happy to know he’ll be playing the game he loves at the next level for the Division III program, which plays in the 10-team Capital Athletic Conference.
“Playing baseball is my passion,” said Pettit. “I’ve wanted to play college baseball since middle school, and being able to achieve this makes my dream of one day playing in Major League Baseball more likely.”
Pettit visited the school recently, which already has two Idaho players on the roster, and liked everything about the small liberal arts college from the top down.
“I like the location, small school atmosphere and the positive vibe from the coaching staff and players. It just felt like the right fit,” said Pettit, who was asked what he loves most about baseball. “I like the challenge the most. That’s what makes it fun. You’re not going to hit every pitch, you’re not going to get everyone out. It’s always a challenge.”
Pettit can play nearly every position on the field, from pitching to catching, and infield and outfield. With plus speed, a strong arm, range on defense and a live bat, he has the tools college coaches covet.
Sandpoint head coach Chase Tigert called Pettit a competitor, the kind of player that simply gets the job done no matter what he’s asked or where he is on the field.
“He can play any position, and play it well. Preston is one of the hardest working players I have ever had the pleasure of coaching,” described Tigert. “I have the utmost confidence that Preston will not only have a significant impact on the SVU program, but I believe he will leave a lasting effect. Preston is the kind of kid college coaches look to build a team around. I believe Preston will have a very successful college career.”
