March 4, 1968 — GRAYS ACCEPT AWARD
Mayor and Mrs. Floyd Gray have returned from Washington, D.C. with a plaque for Sandpoint to honor its outstanding community improvement program in the 1967 National Clean Up Contest. While in Washington, they were awakened by a blast that damaged the nearby Russian embassy. “We later learned a bomb had exploded near the Soviet embassy,” said Mayor Gray.

LARRY STANDISH HOME ON LEAVE
Electronics Technician First Class Larry M. Standish, U.S. Coast Guard, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leigh Standish, Wrencoe, returned from a 10 months’ cruise which consisted of Market Time Patrols in Vietnamese waters. During that time, the Gresham, a 311 ft. high endurance cutter, steamed more than 65,000 miles, visited seven countries and fired over 1,400 rounds of 5-inch ammunition in gunfire support missions.
Standish joined the Coast Guard in Jan. 1965 and is home on leave before reporting to his new duty station in San Francisco.

Vocational agriculture students are preparing for the crops and parliamentary procedure contest in Genesse next Friday.
Rick Larkin was the highest scorer of 10 FFA Club members who attended the Black Angus cattle judging competition in Spokane last week.

Hooverizing in fuel is the proper thing, but when you have reached the limit, telephone the Sandpoint Ice & Fuel Co. for wood and coal.

PALMER’S CAMP, PACK RIVER
The weather has favored us greatly so far this winter; our road is in first class condition yet but we have only a few days’ more sleigh haul.
The river raised a foot last week in just a few seconds when Basil Gooby was helping McNab unload a load of logs and his canthook slipped and he fell into the water and began floating down stream. He came to camp and changed his clothes and said he felt better, but his watch has not turned a wheel since.
While our blacksmith was busy burning coal and iron the other day, he had the misfortune to step on a piece of hot iron and burn the bottom of a new rubber – a poor way to Hooverize.
John Boyer ran a foot race with a falling tree the other day and won by a narrow margin. John says he is one of the fastest men of his age in Idaho.

TO CLOSE EARLY SATURDAYS
An agreement has been reached between the grocerymen and meat dealers of the city whereby they will close their places of business at 8 o’clock Saturday nights. The new arrangement will go into effect on Saturday of next week.
