In response to the recent out-cry about The Follies, I would remind critics that censorship is a slippery slope, and entirely un-American.

Some of the movies shown at the Panida Theater are rated R with vulgar language, nudity and sex. Some of these movies have benefitted our local community radio station. Some artists that perform at The Festival at Sandpoint have dropped F-bombs and spoken in favor of marijuana and certain political candidates. These performances benefit music education in our community. The Follies advertises itself appropriately as rated R and not suitable for the easily offended. Proceeds from The Follies benefit all the good things the Angels Over Sandpoint do for underprivileged people in our community, young and old. That is a good thing.

Since the Follies is a sold-out two-night event every year, there are obviously a whole lot of people who find the contents of the show funny and entertaining. It’s pretty simple: Your right as a citizen of Sandpoint, and of the United States of America, is that you can choose not to go to R-rated movies, concerts or The Follies. But, it is self-centered and self-righteous to tell the rest of us what we should and shouldn’t enjoy and support, especially when it ultimately benefits our community.
