Crowley, Deprez lead Bulldogs in stellar opener

CLARKSTON — How well did things go for the Bulldog golfers at the season opener on Monday in Clarkston?

The boys team finished 25 strokes lower than the same meet last year, while a young girls team absolutely crushed it, scoring a whopping 115 strokes lower than the same meet last year.

Unlike years past, when the weather wreaked havoc on the golfers in the opener, Monday was sunny and warm and ripe for some strong scores.

Nick Crowley led the boys team with a 91, which could have been a lot lower save for a rough start to his round. The boys played at the Clarkston Country Club.

“Nick hit three balls in the water and was down five strokes right off the bat. He let it go, it didn’t affect him and he played well the rest of the round,” lauded Bulldog head coach Tom Tharp, who felt a host of newcomers stepped up big. “We have eight players, there will be a competition each week to see who the five will be.”

Lake Wilks shot a 95, and his freshman younger brother Harley Wilks shot a 106 in his varsity debut, despite also hitting a few balls in the water.

Freshmen CeCe Deprez (93) and Camille Neuder (98) both broke 100 to lead the Bulldog girls, surprisingly low scores for a season opener when most Sandpoint players have only hit balls into a net. The girls played at Quail Ridge Golf Course.

“CeCe went out of bounds twice. Take those away and she’s in the 80s. She’s been playing volleyball, and it’s her first time on a course this year,” said Tharp. “We had three freshman score, which bodes well for the future. I’m real enthused about the season, they’ll continue to drop strokes.”

The Bulldogs return south next Monday at Lewiston.
