March 15, 1918 – BENEFIT A BIG SUCCESS

The Elks’ Red Cross benefit was the biggest affair of its kind ever pulled off here. Besides realizing a good sum for the local Red Cross it afforded a social event high above anything that has gone before. It was great jinks.

It started in the afternoon with a parade. The Gem theatre was packed for the picture show and at the Liberty the largest crowd that ever filled its doors danced, played games, ate candy, cake and sandwiches, and tossed silver into the “melting pot” whenever B. Fisher in a policeman’s makeup told them to. John Bode’s old-time keno paraphernalia was resurrected for the occasion, and the way old-timers lined up and played keno for a pig would do John’s soul good.

Pretty girls in Red Cross costumes attended the booths where ice cream, cakes, sandwiches and coffee were served. Herman Taylor auctioned the cakes Mrs. Patterson had secured from the good cooks of the town, which went from a dollar up, Mrs. Culver’s cocoanut cake bringing a price so high we are afraid to tell it. Attention was called at 11 o’clock to the toast all Elks drink at that hour in honor of the departed members of the order.
