HARBISON HOBBY BECOMES BUSINESS

A hobby that grew into a small business was featured in the March issue of Northwest Ruralite, a Northern Lights, Inc. publication. Subject of the article is 20-year Northern Lights employee, Ralph Harbison, Ponderay.

Mr. and Mrs. Harbison and their son and daughter, Durell and Lorna, have spent their vacations collecting rocks and found so many pretty stones it was obvious something had to be done. The next step was acquiring polishing equipment, a saw to cut rock into various designs, and facilities to mount stones into tie tacks, key chains, bolo ties, earrings and similar items.

They have a clientele who visit their hobby shop to select gift items for friends and relatives. The View Cafe at Cocolalla and Harry’s at Sagle also stock their items for tourists.

March 18, 1918 — COUNTY FEELS QUAKE

The earthquake at about 8:30 Tuesday night was felt distinctly in various parts of Bonner county. At Clarksfork, it rattled dishes and threw chimneys off lamps. Some villagers rushed from their houses thinking the commotion arose from blowing the depot’s safe, got the constable, and made an examination of the premises before being assured there were no yeggmen abroad.

The quake was also noticed at Hope, Laclede and the south end of the long bridge. Sandpoint, apparently, was the only locality where it was not noticed and some have found an explanation for this in the fact that the Elks were making so much noise about that time that so trifling a thing as an earthquake could not be noticed.

CO. B SUMMONED TO ARMS

After receiving wired orders from Governor Alexander to immediately detail 50 men, secure arms, and be ready to move, Captain Herman H. Taylor has summoned Company B to assemble at the barracks tonight at 7:30. A detachment will leave for St. Maries at 4 a.m. over the N.P.

Trouble with the I.W.W’s is the cause of the summons. Wobblies have drifted toward that city for two weeks or more, with the intent, it is feared, of creating a reign of terror when I.W.W. cases come to trial at the term of court in session there.
