BCGA schedules spring horticulture class series

The Bonner County Gardeners Association 2018 Spring Home Horticulture Workshop Series is scheduled now through May 2.

Classes are $10 each per person and will be held Wednesdays from 6-8 p.m. at the Ponderay Event Center, 401 Bonner Mall Way, Suite F, Ponderay. All classes start promptly at 6 p.m.; check-in begins at 5:30 and participants are asked to please be on time. It is requested that no children under 12 at the sessions.

Classes are designed to provide garden and landscape information to beginning gardeners as well as the “old hands.” The schedule is as follows:

- March 21 – Pruning Trees and Shrubs: Gail Blasingame will demonstrate methods of pruning to keep your trees and shrubs attractive and looking healthy.

- March 28 – Wind and Storm Safety: Michael Richard-son of Sky-walker Tree Service will teach ways of reducing the danger of falling trees from windstorms as well as protecting your property from fire.

- April 4-Growing Dahlias: Paul Kusche knows dahlias come in so many colors and sizes to choose from; he will provide secrets to growing great dahlias in our N. Idaho climate.

- April 11- Native Plants w/Derek Antonelli and Kevin Lyons: Derek is an expert on native plants and will discuss using them in your landscape; Kevin, Cultural Resources Management of the Kalispel Tribe, will focus on native edibles with an historical perspective.

- April 18: Basic Irrigation Systems for Gardening: Sean Mitzel will explore differebt principles of water and irrigation design and will also provide some techniques for setting up and maintaining inexpensive irrigation systems.

- April 25: Successful Planting of Trees and Shrubs: John Hastings of All Seasons Garden and Floral will discuss planting trees and shrubs under a variety of conditions, such as slopes and other difficult areas and how to ensure healthy, long-lived plants.

- May 2: Growing and Using Herbs: Monica Mitzel will disclose how to use common weeds, bushes and trees for medicinal and edible purposes. She will include recipes for infused oils, salves, vinegars, food and drinks.
