Ponderay OKs new shooting range
PONDERAY — Hunters and target shooters will be able to dial in their accuracy in greater comfort and with better convenience in the near future.
The City Council unanimously approved on Monday a special use permit for a modern indoor shooting range along U.S. Highway 95 south of Bronx Road.
It would be the first facility of its kind in Bonner County.
The Ponderay Planning & Zoning Commission unanimously recommended approval of the project when it was considered during a prior public hearing.
At least one nearby landowner expressed unease with the proposal during the prior hearing due to noise impacts and effect on the rural ambiance of the neighborhood.
However, the shooting range’s acoustics are designed to keep the report of gunshots contained and within the city’s decibel threshold, according to city Planner Erik Brubaker.
“The sound impacts don’t even carry within the building,” Brubaker said.
The facility, which is forecasted to between 9,000 and 10,000 square feet, would feature 10 lanes for firearms users and an another five lanes for archery enthusiasts, according to company officials. It would cater to everyone from youthful shooters to law enforcement professionals.
Sheriff Daryl Wheeler testified in support of the facility during the P&Z hearing, according to city officials. Deputies would use the range to routinely maintain their firearms proficiency, a requirement that’s typically fulfilled at an outdoor range on Baldy Mountain.
The facility would also serve as Wrenco Arms’ new retail space for firearms and accessories, in addition to serving as a repair shop and venue for local clubs and groups to gather. Moreover, it will provide space for the company’s various instructional and certification programs.
Brubaker said Wrenco will utilize landscaping and a standing good-neighbor policy to help ensure it is harmonious with its surroundings and nearby landowners.
“It sounds like everything’s been addressed,” Councilwoman Kathy Osborn said, referring to concerns raised by neighbors.
Councilman Gary Kunzeman moved to approve the permit and Councilman Phillip McNearney seconded the motion. It cleared the council without decent.
Wrenco officials said they are targeting a late 2018 or early 2019 opening date.
