| March 21, 2018 1:00 AM

BONNERS FERRY — Annika Rantala won the 3,200 in her first high school race, posting the 10th fastest mark in Spartan track history to lead the Priest River track and field team on Saturday at the season-opening Bonners Ferry Invitational.

Colby Poe won the discus and was second in the shot, establishing PRs in both in a strong first showing. The Spartan boys feature 11 returning state qualifiers, including Poe.

“He has been working very hard in the weight room and during drill work and it is paying off big time,” said Spartan track coach Jared Hughes, in his 15th season leading the team. “Both marks are now No. 16 on our all-time records list.”

Teagun Holycross was second in the 300 hurdles and 200 meters, posting excellent times in both to move him into the top 10 Idaho 3A rankings. Drayven Ayers posted a PR to win the 200 and was third in the high jump, Robbie Anselmo was second in the 100 and the 4x400 and 4x200 relays were second and third, respectively to lead the boys team.

Alaina Guevarra was third in the pole vault.

“She was not happy with her height, but it was her first time over a bar this spring,” admitted Hughes. “We see great things for her this season.”

The Spartans are at Colfax on Saturday.

n Spartans swept by Lumberjacks in softball season opener

ST. MARIES — Amber Rose Walrod drove in three runs in each game for the Lumberjacks in a sweep of the young Spartans in the season opener for both schools on Saturday.

Tawny Nichols and Jasmine Martin started for the Spartans (0-2, 0-2 IML), both going the distance in defeat. The Spartans committed just three errors on the day, a good sign going forward.

“It was the first time we put cleats on and had been on dirt or grass. I’m pleased with the way we played defensively, but we struggled to get any offense going,” said Spartan head coach Rob DeMent. “We had chances to get runs on the board, and struggled to get a timely hit. With our lack of experience, I’m happy with how we started the season, considering we’ve been practicing in the gym for two weeks.”

Karah Fink, Tabitha Richey and Nichols each had hits in defeat.

The Spartans hosted Sandpoint on Tuesday, see today’s Bee sports for the story.
