March 25, 1968 — STIDWELL HONORED
Charles Stidwell, retired Junior High principal, was an honored guest at the birthday dinner of American Legion Post No. 15 and Auxiliary. Commander Lawrence Barker gave Stidwell a plaque for his many years of service to education and the community’s youth. Master of ceremonies was J.A. Naccarato, Post vice commander.

JIM BENOIT NOW ON ACTIVE DUTY
Jim Benoit, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. “Bud” Benoit, Sandpoint, has left for San Antonio, Tex., where he will serve in the base legal office at Kelly Field. Benoit recently passed the California Bar exam and is now fulfilling his military obligation with the U.S. Air Force.

FHA APPROVES LOAN TO ODEN WATER
A $208,000 insured loan to the Oden Water Assn. to develop a rural water system has been approved by the Farmers Home Administration. Oden Water Assn. presently consists of 100 farm and rural families living in the Oden, Sunnyside, West Kootenai Point and Selle areas.

SYRINGA HEIGHTS LAUNCHES EFFORT
Bud Moon, interim chairman, has announced formation of the Syringa Heights Water Assn. Besides Moon, the board includes Dr. F.E. Marienau, Ward Tifft, Gene Littlefield and Norman Bolstad. The group has 16 members so far.

March 25, 1918 — RIFLES FORTHCOMING
Governor Alexander announced that rifles will be purchased immediately for Idaho’s national guard. Funds appropriated for the militia, of which a balance of some $38,000 remains, will be used.

JUNIOR SOCIAL A SUCCESS ANYWAY
The Nordman school Junior Red Cross society put on a program and basket social, stirring up a hornet’s nest of socialism, I.W.W’s and their sympathizers (among them the Nordman postmistress), who did all they could against the work. Nevertheless from the small number of “True sons of America” who attended and donations from those who could not, we realized $47.25. Pretty good for our little school of eight pupils, isn’t it? Jennie H. White, teacher.

PERMIT TO DAM SAND CREEK GIVEN
At Monday’s city council meeting, George Ross of Mayor Ewing’s committee said he has found it is unnecessary to obtain the consent of property owners to construct a dam. A law enacted a few years ago vests control of streams in the state land board, and Ross has obtained written permits of that board as well as the county commissioners for construction of the proposed dam over the creek. Now it is up to the people of Sandpoint to carry forward the project of creating a storage pond for the Sommers Bros. sawmill.
