Helen T. Callaway, 100
Helen Turinsky Callaway passed away March 6, 2018, at her home in La Verne, Calif., at the age of 100. She was born Dec. 10, 1917, to Otto and Julia Turinsky, who emigrated from Eastern Europe prior to World War I. Helen was the youngest of six children and the only child in the family to be born in the United States.
She graduated from the University of Idaho, where she met and married George Callaway. They were married for 64 years until his passing in 2001.
Helen had varied interests and passions throughout the years. She was an accomplished cook, an avid gardener, and always interested in happenings in her community. Helen was an active member of the Children’s Fund/Children’s Home Society for over 40 years. She volunteered for years at her children’s school. The family has a number of pottery pieces that she created. She also worked at the family business, C&E Lumber in Pomona, Calif.
At the age of 80, she wrote and published a book entitled, “I Remember”, which was a detailed history of the Turinsky and Callaway families. What a gift to us all, that she wrote this book. Countless stories, recipes, names and dates that would have otherwise been lost.
Helen is survived by her son, Ross Callaway of La Verne, Calif.; her daughter, Becky Benavides of Sandpoint; and four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
