100 Years Ago — 1918
News from the lake
The Nickel Plate has had logs cut and hauled to its new sawmill at the mine. Sawing will start soon and summer cottages and other buildings will be erected.
Bert Winslow is one of the busiest men at the lake. He is hauling about 1500 pounds of whitefish each day from the head of the lake to Coolin.
Jim Hathaway and McEvoy proposed to cancel the school term at Upper West Branch. They say all the settlers moved out the past winter.
90 Years Ago — 1928
Seeks mining capital
Robert Kane has mining interests in the Pine Creek district and has been endeavoring to interest capital in Seattle in his mining claims. Mr. Kane has been in this country about 30 years and has done a great deal of prospecting, on one of his claims having tunneled 1500 feet, 1200 feet by himself alone. He is very optimistic about the future of the Priest River Mining District.

The Priest River Band will play at the Elks Anniversary Parade at Sandpoint.

Moore most valuable player
Basketball player Earl Moore was awarded the Priest River Vets Most Valuable Player award for 1957-58 at the annual team dinner given by the VFW Auxiliary.

Completes stewardess training
Miss Rosalie Maio, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Maio, has become a United Air Lines Stewardess.
40 Years Ago — 1978
McCracken wins middleweight title
Jeff McCracken, Laclede, is the undisputed middleweight king for all the Armed Forces, winning the crown at the Interservice Boxing Championships at Camp LeJeune, N.C., on March 15. McCracken’s opponent was the polished and powerful 2nd Lt. Dana Myers. The fights were the culmination of a long road begun months ago at Marine camps, Air Force bases, Army posts and Navy bases around the globe.

Musicians united in concert
Elementary school bands from four local schools joined forces to form a large concert band at Priest River Elementary School on the afternoon of March 16. About 75 band members represented Priest River, Idaho Hill, Priest Lake and House of the Lord Christian Academy. They played to an audience of over 500 students and about 100 adults. Rod Christensen, band instructor, divides his duties between the four schools.

Oil tanks threatened
A fire broke out in an unoccupied house on Saturday, March 28, next door to the Family Oil Company on Cedar Street. The oil company’s storage tanks that had just been filled were approximately 30 feet away from the flaming house. A spokesman for the Priest River Fire Department said the fire broke out at approximately 7 p.m. The danger for the community was the fire’s proximity to the oil company fuel storage and holding tanks. A halogen lamp left burning in the living room is thought to be the origin of the fire. Damage was estimated at $110,000. The house is owned by Caroline and Judy Jenkins.

Peace efforts held at PRLHS
Peace efforts continue at Priest River Lamanna High School after a growing war clique quickly escalated into rumors of weapons and violence last week. A reported 60 students remained absent for the week due to the threat on safety. The concerns resulted in school officials taking action. The most recent efforts to put an end to the squabbles resulted in a partnership between the school faculty and a group called Partners in Peacemaking, based out of Sandpoint.
