Wilks, Crowley earn spots at state golf tourney

SANDPOINT — The Lakeland boys and girls teams punched their tickets to state, and also got a sneak preview of the course that will host the upcoming 4A state tournament, as the Hawks claimed team titles on Monday at the 4A Region 1 golf tournament at the Idaho Club.

Lakeland has now played the only Jack Nicklaus course in Idaho twice in the past week, a great tune-up and advantage for the upcoming state tournament.

The good news for Sandpoint was that Nick Crowley (89) and Lake Wilks (80) earned at-large bids to state by finishing in the top three individually in the boys field, after the Bulldog boys finished seven strokes back in second.

It was a rough day for a young Bulldog girls golf team, which struggled on its home course, led by the 101 of C.C. Deprez.

“It was a long round. It’s not an easy golf course with lots of rough,” said Bulldog head coach Tom Tharp. “I’m proud of the boys, we got two to state.”

The state tournament will be held on May 14-15 at the Idaho Club, with teams from around the state getting a rare chance to play the Golden Bear’s course.
