I have gotten to know lieutenant governor candidate Steve Yates over the course of his campaign, and have gained a certain understanding of his political philosophy and policy goals. I have made an appraisal of Mr. Yates and that judgment compels me to write this endorsement.

My support for Steve does not come from his background. His service on Vice President Dick Cheney’s staff. A stint at the Heritage Foundation. That he is a self-employed policy advisor. Idaho Republican Party Chairman. Nor his largest asset — his command of the Mandarin language, Chinese culture, and that country’s methods of doing business as Idaho wrestles with economic policy options to confront the threat. All the men and women running for the office will have qualifications. They are just that, qualifications.

I have observed the political landscape and listened to the utterances of office seekers for 40 years. What I have witnessed over time is that rooted character leads to deeply held principles, which in turn guides behavior. The issue of character is paramount. I believe Mr. Yates has that requisite quality. And because he does, he will be a trusted, predictable and professional steward of the office he seeks, and therefore, the people he serves. I encourage you to join me in supporting Steve Yates on May 15.
