Poe, Parks second at District 1 Meet of Champions to lead Spartan track and field team

POST FALLS — Colby Poe threw a personal best 143-10 in the discus, good enough for a second place finish last week at the Meet of Champions in Post Falls, which drew 15 teams from 1A through 5A to compete.

Poe’s mark is the fourth best in the state 3A rankings, one of several Spartans in the top 5 of the rankings. Poe also put the shot 43-7 to finish fourth in Post Falls.

Cameron Parks was second in the 3,200 in 10:43, and third in the triple jump with a personal best 40-5. Parks also teamed with Dylan Glazier, Brandon McCracken and Caleb Gleason to finish third in the 4x800 relay in 9:08, the third fastest mark in 3A this season.

The 4x200 team of Robbie Anselmo, Drayven Ayers, Teagan Holycross and Spencer Sedgwick finished 6th in a time of 1:36.8. The team holds the third fastest time in 3A this year.

Other Spartan boys to notch top 10 finishes included Caleb Gleason 7th in the 3,200 (11:01), Holycross 8th in the 100 (12.30) and Ayers 8th in the 200 (24.35).

Annika Rantala was fourth in the 3,200 in 13:29 to lead the Spartan girls, and also teamed with Kymara Fulton, Sharnai Hogan and Izzy Schmidt to finish 3rd in the 4x800 relay in 11:46.

The medley relay team of Cassidy Prudek, Haile Moore, Shayla Martinez and Katelyn Marks finished 7th in 2:10.9. Other Spartan girls to notch top 10 finishes included Prudek 6th in long jump (13-7) and Fulton 10th in the 3,200 in a personal best time of 14:18.

The Spartan track and field team is at the 3A District 1 track and field championships on Thursday, at 4 p.m. at Timberlake High School.

n Randolph shines in win over Wildcats

PRIEST RIVER — Natalie Randolph’s walk-off two run double in extra innings propelled the Spartans to a 10-8 win over Kellogg in Intermountain League softball action recently.

The Spartans (5-15) won in dramatic fashion, after squandering an early 7-0 second inning lead to hold on for the win. Randolph also earned the win in the circle, striking out nine in seven innings of work.

Tawny Nichols had three hits, including a double, and drove in three runs, Liann Krenn added three hits and two RBIs, and Cassandra Deremer drove in two and scored twice to lead the Spartans’ offense, which rapped 11 hits.

n Lucas sparkles in pitching duel with 12 strikeouts on Senior Night

PRIEST RIVER — Sophomore Jantzen Lucas was filthy, striking out 12 in a complete game three-hitter, leading the Spartans in a 1-0 tough luck loss to Kellogg recently in Intermountain League baseball action.

The Spartans (0-16, 0-9 IML) were hungry for their first win on Senior Night, and Jantzen gave them every chance, holding the Wildcats (4-14, 3-7 IML) scoreless until the seventh.

“Jantzen Lucas threw a great game for us, keeping the Kellogg hitters off balance all game. He threw the ball really well,” said head coach Mark Schultz. “We really did play well, everyone played well, just needed to get that big hit to break the ice and get some runs on the board.”

Seniors Coal Stevens, Cameron Reeves and Larry Naccarato were honored, and Schultz admitted Senior Night can be tough.

“All these senior have provided leadership to our team this year, being a great teammate, and working hard,” said Schultz. “They will all be missed and I thank them for their effort.”

n Salesky qualifies for 3A state golf tournament

TWIN LAKES — Kody Salesky punched his ticket to state by firing an 80, good enough for second place this week at the 3A District 1 tournament at Twin Lakes Village.

The Kellogg boys shot 345, well ahead of second-place Timberlake. Both teams qualified for state.

Junior Kat Rauenhorst shot 90 to lead Kellogg’s girls to another district title. The Wildcats shot 418, 24 strokes better than Timberlake. Both teams qualified for state.

Ben Zapfe fired a 92, just four strokes away from earning a spot at state, which is next Monday and Tuesday at Twin Lakes Village, a great advantage for Salesky.

Maddy Rusho carded a 109, just three strokes away from qualifying as an individual, leading the young Spartan girls.
