At this past Tuesday’s candidate forum, Dan McDonald proved why he deserves a second term. Briefly:

- Dan opposes the Scotchman Peaks wilderness designation. His concern, and ours, is unmanaged fuel loads, resulting in devastating fires that leave the lands sterile. He also understands the designation would be permanent, limiting our uses forever.

- Since he took office, Dan has willingly worked the long hours the job of commissioner requires. He’s available 24 hours a day for anyone with an issue needing immediate attention.

- Dan is a fiscal conservative. In his first year, he made nearly $9 million in budget cuts without a loss of services. He promises that working toward a balanced budget will continue in his second term.

- Finally, Dan understands that the hot-button smelter issue is a Washington state decision. He’s awaiting the permitting process to run its course before taking a position as a commissioner. He understands that taking a stance before all of the information is made available could leave the county open to liability claims. And to that we say: good. We want a commissioner who makes informed decisions based on facts, not emotion, and who will never place taxpayers in a position of liability.

Please join us in voting for Dan McDonald in the May 15 primary.
