Shelley Franklin Johnson, 60
Shelley Franklin Johnson, 60, passed away peacefully in her home in Sandpoint, Idaho, with her son and adoring husband by her side after a yearlong battle with liver cancer on Monday, May 14, 2018.
She was a loving daughter, wife, mother and friend. Born on November 5, 1957 in San Diego she attended Bishops Schools in La Jolla, UCLA and San Diego State University. She loved language and spoke Spanish, Italian and French. Her BA from San Diego State was in dramatic arts where she was an accomplished actor and singer. More than anything she loved animals which lead her to her career as a certified veterinary technician. In her youth, her passion was horses. She rode and competed in jumper class. While at UCLA she was employed by a family member to ride and work his polo ponies.
She met her husband Scott Johnson while at San Diego State, also a dramatic arts major. They had numerous classes together as well as being cast in many productions together. Best friends and soul mates best describe their relationship and were married in 1980 at the ripe old age of 22.
After their son Trevor Johnson was born in 1990 they decided to leave the hustle and bustle of Southern California in 1994 and moved to Sandpoint. Leading the way were Shelley’s parents, Phil and Michael Franklin, who relocated there in 1993.
Shelley was hired by Pend Oreille Veterinary Service as a vet tech in 1994 where she remained until October 2017, her only employer in Sandpoint. She finished her tenure at POVS as their bookkeeper and HR person, having performed those duties for the last seven years.
She was an active hiker and loved nothing better than to take her dog(s) for long hikes. She also loved yoga and was a regular enthusiast. She performed in many theatrical productions in Sandpoint as well as assistant directing several others. She was an excellent cook and loved trying new recipes and her passion for food lead her son Trevor into following her footsteps by becoming a chef.
A competitive streak ran through her, she always strove for the best and didn’t like to lose. She was also an avid football fan and loved the Green Bay Packers. She also had an excellent sense of humor, loved classic films and musicals.
A celebration of Shelley’s life will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 14, 2018, at the Heartwood Center in Sandpoint.
