May 22, 1968 — YOUTH CENTER SETS GOAL

Senior high student representatives and adults interested in a Sandpoint Teen Center set the goal of opening the new center in the Eagles’ old Lake Theatre. The date is July 15.

HADLEY AND JOHNSON WIN AWARDS

Two Sandpoint students have won awards at the national level in the Junior American citizens Contest sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Ted Hadley, a sophomore at Sandpoint Senior High, was awarded second place in the music division in the high school category. Mike R. Johnson, a first grader in Mrs. Corrine Tribe’s room at Washington School, was awarded third place in the poster division in the elementary category.

Hadley is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Hadley. Johnson is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Beaner Johnson.

CITY PLANNING GROUP HEARS MATTER

At their meeting on May 27th in Sandpoint city hall, the commission will hear the pros and cons on making a portion of the Community Hall lawn into a parking lot.

May 22, 1918 — ITALIAN DAY FRIDAY

Friday, May 24, will be observed throughout the U.S. as Italian day. The observance will not call for closing stores, offices or banks, but the spirit of the movement will be to prominently display the national flag of Italy as a mark of respect to one of our European associates in the titanic struggle now raging in that country as well as in France and Belgium. Friday will designate the third anniversary of Italy’s entrance in the war on the side of democracy and freedom.

STATE WARRANTS PAID TO MILITIA

Without pomp or ceremony, Captain H.H. Taylor of B company appeared in several businesses Thursday carrying a leather sack and a roll of paper. Before one could determine his intention he commanded the man, or men, to “sign here” and then and there placed a sheet of paper between the thumb and index finger of the man signing. A look of amazement in most cases overspread the man’s countenance as he beheld an honest to goodness state warrant in payment for his volunteer services at St. Maries in the recent I.W.W. trouble.

AUTOISTS ATTENTION

As a mark of deep respect, all citizens in the city owning automobiles are asked to join in the G.A.R. parade on May 30, to celebrate in a fitting manner Decoration day. This year’s affair will be conducted as in the past, although there will not be so many grand army men participating, as there are now only ten remaining in the post.
