Holiday weekend packed with a bit of everything

SANDPOINT — We’ve got a full menu and a little bit of everything for Memorial Day Weekend — concerts, plays, films and more.

The action starts tonight with the SHS Band Extravaganza at the Panida. Friday night, KRFY presents the film ‘Rumble,’ also at the Panida and on Saturday, the play ‘PS: Your Cat is Dead’ opens at the Heartwood Center.

Thursday, May 24

SHS Spring Band Extravaganza Concert

Venue: Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 6:30 p.m.

The annual Sandpoint High School Band Concert features the Concert and Symphonic Bands, Jazz 1 and 2, and Steel Pans.

Admission: $5 at the door or online at panida.org

Brian Jacobs

Venue: MickDuff’s Beer Hall, 220 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 6 p.m.

Come out for the Thursday night solo music series featuring Brian Jacobs with his guitar and great tunes.

Friday, May 25

KRFY presents ‘Rumble’

Venue: Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7:30 p.m.

KRFY community radio hosts ‘Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World.’ Rumble is a documentary film that brings to light a profound and missing chapter of American music history — the Indigenous influence. It features pioneering Native musicians including Charley Patton, Mildred Bailey, Link Wray, Jimi Hendrix, Jesse Ed Davis, Buffy Saint-Marie, Robbie Robertson, Randy Castillo and Taboo. Not rated.

Admission: Free and open to the public; donations accepted.

Bright Moments Jazz

Venue: Eichardt’s Pub, 212 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7-10 p.m.

There’s live music and then there’s woke music — the transcendent kind played by this top-drawer, local jazz band. Make plans to catch their sound.

Admission: Free and open to the public.

Naughty Pine

Venue: 219 Lounge, 219 First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 9 p.m.

Back by popular demand, Naughty Pine will entertain you by mixing irreverent innuendo with a tried and true blend of soulful reggae.

Admission: Free for those 21 and over.

The Other White Meat

Venue: MickDuff’s Beer Hall, 220 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 6:30 p.m.

This classic rock and roll band from North Idaho has been around since the early 1990’s, opening for such acts as G. Thorogood, Styx, REO Speedwagon and The Doobie Bros. Featuring Kyle Swaffard, Benny Baker and Dana Peite.

Admission: Free to those 21 and over.

Britchy

Venue: Pend d’Oreille Winery, 301 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 5-8 p.m.

Join the fun for some great Americana. This Missoula duo features fine pickin’ and timeless songwriting.

Bare Grass

Venue: Idaho Pour Authority, 203 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 5 p.m.

‘PS: Your Cat is Dead’

Venue: The Heartwood Center, 615 Oak St., in Sandpoint.

Time: Doors at 6 p.m., play starts at 7 p.m.

Presented by Cade Prophet Memorial Productions. The story goes like this: It’s New Year’s Eve in New York City. Your best friend died in September, you’ve been robbed twice, your girlfriend is leaving you, you’ve lost your job ... P.S. your cat is dead. Cade Prophet Memorial Productions was founded to produce events that will raise money for the Panhandle Animal Shelter.

‘Death of Stalin’

Venue: Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Moscow, 1953: When tyrannical dictator Joseph Stalin drops dead, his parasitic cronies square off in a frantic power struggle to be the next Soviet leader. Among the contenders are the dweeby Georgy Malenkov (Jeffrey Tambor), the wily Nikita Khrushchev (Steve Buscemi), and the sadistic secret police chief Lavrentiy Beria (Simon Russell Beale). But as they bumble, brawl, and backstab their way to the top, just who is running the government?

Sounds like Heaven — the music of Bright Moments in the air as you stroll through our magical farmer’s market.

Sandpoint’s Jazz Band is back on the prowl and this show at the Beer Hall will be a dance party! Arthur Goldblum and crew bring their upbeat and classic jazz sound to the Beer Hall.

Still Tipsy & The Hangovers

Venue: 219 Lounge, 219 First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 9 p.m.

Still Tipsy and the Hangovers from 9 pm to midnight. After time off, this favorite Sandpoint Rockabilly trio is back together and kicking off their return at the Admission: Free for those 21 and over.

Oak Street Connection

Fifth Anniversary Party

Time: John Firshi from 2-4 p.m. and Browne Salmon Truck from 5-7 p.m.

Lots of live music and complimentary food will be served all day, with raffle prize proceeds donated to the Bonner Community Food Bank.

SHS Choirs Spring Fling concert

The Panida hosts the Sandpoint High School Choirs’ Spring Fling. Choirs will sing and dance, with production numbers and many solos as well.

‘The Groove is Not Trivial’

Venue: Panida Little Theater, 304 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7 p.m.

The subject of this new documentary is the journey of discovery of world-renowned Scottish fiddler, Alasdair Fraser, who gave a well-attended performance at the Panida early in 2017.

State of the Scotchman’s annual address

Venue: Oden Hall, 143 Sunnyside Rd., in Sunnyside.

Time: Social hour begins at 6 p.m., Joslin’s presentation begins at 7 p.m.

Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness holds its annual State of the Scotchman’s address. Mountain goat expert Gayle Joslin will be the featured speaker. Learn who the FSPW Old Goat is and get a chance to bid on some interesting items as part of the silent auction.
