In September, the River Valley Beacon reported on a “human rights club” approved by the school board. This lunch time “club” was touted as an opportunity for students to “talk about different cultures or races and focus on origins.” I reviewed the “heritages” they plan to “respect and learn about.” These “heritages” included Hispanics in September, disabled persons in October, Native Americans etc, in November, men and LGBTQ in December, the Middle East in January, African Americans in February, Women in March, Asians in April, and “European (Irish, Polish, etc.)” in May.

When did LGBTQ become a “race?” I believe it only refers to sexual preferences. Why is LGBTQ grouped with “men?” What kind of a slant will this club give to kids about men? Why aren’t they focusing on men as head of the family, instead of as LGBTQ? Are “women” a heritage? Is the club going to discuss women in the home? “European (Irish Polish)” in May? What about the English, French, Germans and Scandinavians from which most of us are descended? Why isn’t there a focus on our origins, instead of on aberrant sexual preferences? Is this what we want as a “club” for our high school students?
