New owner, same great league at Huckleberry Lanes

SANDPOINT — With newly refinished lanes under new ownership at Huckleberry Lanes, the scores have been going up slightly at the local bowling leagues, including the long running and popular Cherry Pickers League.

The league features 10 teams, with scores ranging from the low 200s down to the 90s. Two of the league officers happen to be excellent bowlers, with president Rick Weimer rolling a high game of 212 this year, while vice president Syndi Macha has a high game of 179.

“It’s exciting, it’s fun,” described Macha of the Cherry Pickers League.

Macha once posted a 264 game, and she holds the Sandpoint women’s record for a three game series, rolling a sizzling 756 series more than 25 years ago. She has won state titles in Michigan and California, and has competed at nationals.

New Huckleberry Lanes owner John Brekke, who bought the lanes in July, is offering three adult leagues, two sanctioned leagues, two youth leagues and a club league.

“We’re going to add a fun league,” said Brekke, joking with the Cherry Pickers. “These guys are serious.”

There is also a bounce house, arcade, two new pool tables, beer, wine and food, and 14 recently re-finished lanes, each of which has a new scoring system.

The bowling lanes are open seven days a week, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday through Thursday, and from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
