Veterans Day events set
SANDPOINT — Area schools and businesses are honoring local veterans, beginning this past week and continuing into next week.
Veterans Day got its start a year after World War I ended on Nov. 11, 1918. At first, the anniversary was known as “Armistice Day;” then in 1938, Veterans Day became a national holiday, celebrated on Nov. 11 to pay tribute to all Americans who honorably served their country.
Local schools have held programs for several years, but last year marked the first time events were spread out rather than all in the same day, allowing veterans to attend all of the events and meet with local students as well as attend community tributes.
In addition, a variety of community tributes and celebrations are planned.
