Southside goes full STEAM
COCOLALLA — With nearly 200 people in attendance, Southside Elementary School had an amazing turn out for the recent Family STEAM event.
The 184 attendees on Oct. 16 consisted of 74 students and their family members. The event was a great success due to the local companies who took time to come and share information about their company and how STEAM skills — science, technology, engineering, art and math — are used in their business. The companies that attended include Tamarack Aerospace, U.S. Naval Acoustic Research Detachment, Idaho Department of Fish and Game, Kochava and Idaho Forest Group, as well as local artist Daris Judd. A grant through the Idaho Stem Action Center provided Southside with funds for the night’s activities.
The structure of the event had students rotating around in groups to hear about the local companies and what STEAM skills are used to do their jobs. Students filled out passports of what the learned from each company. The last part of the evening was a hands on STEAM activity. The activities included coding, designing a key chain to be 3D printed, building a bridge with civil engineer Logan Sorensen, and building rubberband cars with mechanical engineer Bryon Bowles.
This event was rewarding and very educational for student’s and their families. It makes your day when you see kids excited about learning and relating their learning to real world applications. One of the students said as they were walking out, “This event was so fun. I really enjoyed learning about business in our community.”
