Girls win consolation title
Taylor Stewart hit three first half 3-pointers en route to a game-high 21 points to lead Priest River past St. Maries in the consolation game of the Lady Bengal tournament. Melissa Hopkins finished with seven points and 10 rebounds and Jamie Koch added nine points.

Four more teachers possible
If voters approve the split of the Bonner County School District next month, the new West Bonner District No. 83 will receive enough money from the state to hire nearly one additional teacher per school… Based on the most current numbers, the new West district would be left with about 1,620 of the 6,177 students enrolled throughout District 82, or about 28 percent of the population.

DAW starts big layoffs
At least 40 Albeni Falls DAW mill workers have been temporarily laid off, and the total amount of layoffs may be triple that amount before employees begin to go back to work. Plant manager Harry Cowger said the planer will probably run out of wood tonight and layoffs may peek at around 110 by next week.

City wins betterment award
More than one Priest River resident, upon hearing that the city had been selected from among the five Panhandle counties for a Community Betterment Award, wondered aloud what the town had done to deserve the honor. Mike Cady, local coordinator for the Panhandle Area Council that gave the award, explained that it honored not visible achievement or completed projects, but was a tribute to the efforts of the community to “fire up and get going.” He noted that the completion of projects often takes years and spans several administrations.

Officers elected
At a recent election of new officers for the coming year, Les Krizenesky was elected president of Rivercrest Golf Course; Ed Miles, vice president; Karen Satterlee, secretary; and Lorraine Miles, treasurer. The annual awards banquet will be held Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. Dancing will follow the presentation of awards.

Spring drive will be a record
William Whetsler, logging operations foreman for the Diamond Match Company on Priest Lake, reports the coming spring’s log drive will be the largest on record.

Elk shot illegally
Three elk, two cows and a calf, were found shot last week on the North Fork of East River. A party from Coeur d’ Alene found them and reported by telephone to Leonard Paul of Coolin, who notified Game Warden Long at Priest River.

Some things not edible
A few weeks ago Billy Palmer got a toothpick caught in his throat and had to have it removed by a doctor. Then a little boy from Laclede had a pin caught in his throat and had to have the doctor remove it. Now comes Mrs. Fann’s cat with a needle in its throat that the doctor had to remove.

Soldier’s death reported
Clarence Holland, age 20, who enlisted and was assigned to the 146th Field Artillery in 1917, died Oct. 27, of wounds received during the closing days of the war in Europe.
Hospital improvements noted
The Priest River Hospital is being improved by the finishing of the upstairs into additional rooms.
