Marion Elizabeth Mitchell

“For it is written, What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived — the things God has prepared for those who love him.” (1 Corinthians 2:19)

Marion Elizabeth Mitchell, who saw beauty and Jesus in everything, is now “tasting and seeing” the unimaginable goodness of His eternal presence.

Marion was born on Aug 10, 1921, in Palo Alto, California, to Mildred and Easton Carter. Amidst the Great Depression, she had a happy childhood with her parents and three sisters, sharing time between the beaches of Monterey and Carmel and the mountains of Lake Tahoe, which grew her intense love for beauty, nature and water.

In 1942, she was married to John C. Mitchell and, after spending the long years of World War II apart, settled in Santa Maria and later Bakersfield, California There, she lived with intention and joy, loving and nurturing her family, taking great joy in swimming and painting, and seriously engaging in her calling as a prayer warrior.

As the true lover of adventure that she was, at the age of 95, she made Sandpoint, Idaho, her final residence. She kept up “her work” until Friday, Nov. 16, 2018, at the age of 97, when she heard the words “Well done, good and faithful servant,” and passed as she lived, worshipping His name, caring for others, and pointing us to Jesus.

She is survived by her two daughters, Elizabeth Hiott and Victoria Grafton; and their spouses; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; and innumerable beloved friends to take up the standard of Christ on this earth. We love you forever, and look forward to the glorious reunion in heaven.

A celebration of life service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 24, at Luther Park in Sandpoint. Marion will be laid to rest with her husband, Capt. John C. Mitchell, at Riverside National Cemetery.
