Hutto sparks Bulldogs in win over Vikings

| October 3, 2018 1:00 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — Senior defender Jezza Hutto moved up into the midfield in the second half for the Bulldogs, and made her presence felt with a goal and an assist to lead Sandpoint to a 2-1 road win over Coeur d’Alene on Tuesday under the lights.

After a scoreless first half, Sandpoint (8-3-1) head coach Conor Baranski challenged his team to bring more energy, and they responded in a big way.

“They were a different team in the second half, more confident, more hungry,” said Baranski. “We moved Jezza to the central midfield and she absolutely changed the game.”

Hutto scored the game’s first goal in the 46th minute, finishing a pass from Riley Walkington for a 1-0 lead. The Vikings (7-5-1) got an equalizer from Zoe Cox, but the Bulldogs had an answer when Walkington finished an assist for her 18th goal of the season, yet another with her off-foot, this one a pretty game winner.

“I knew she was going to score, with her determination and clutch playing. She hit it with her left back across the keeper, it was fantastic,” said Baranski, also lauding the play of goalie Hattie Larson and defenders Mya Darling and Emma Thielbahr. “Hattie was excellent in goal again. Mya and Emma really picked up their play in the second half. It was a great win for us under the lights against a hungry and organized Coeur d’Alene team.”

Sandpoint is at Post Falls tonight, in another game played under the lights, then will travel to face Moscow on Thursday, in a match that was moved up from Saturday.
