As members of a seven-generation Bonner County family, we think voters should use their knowledge of our community in their ballot decisions. Take Dan Rose’s Proposition 2 recommendation (Daily Bee, Oct. 2) as a counter-example.

“... (B)eneficiaries of this proposition are capable working individuals … not the disabled or mentally-ill people... If employer-subsidized health insurance coverage is an attraction/compensation for low-paying employment, who will want to work at low pay when they can get Medicaid for free?”

Before opposing Prop 2 on political or conjectural grounds, Mr. Rose should talk to people who work in the trades, hospitality, childcare, small retail, recreation, forestry, farming, or ranching. Simply ask about their medical insurance. It is not so easy to find local jobs that offer insurance or pay enough to afford medical insurance or care.

It has always been difficult to cobble together a living here. It still is difficult for many, many of us. Medicaid expansion bolsters the middle class by preventing ruined health or finances. We should take a very careful look at this option.

Gov. Butch Otter’s commission found that Medicaid expansion works for the economy. Voters, we encourage you to check out Proposition 2, a local volunteer-led ballot initiative. Have conversations with some of the many hard-working Bonner County people whose lives it could positively change. Vote for Prop 2 on Nov. 6 or by in-person absentee voting starting Oct. 9.
